National Association of Home Builders Honors Pringle Creek Community As Leading Model of Sustainable Development
Salem’s Pringle Creek Receives First Ever NAHB Land Development of the Year Award
SALEM, Ore. - Pringle Creek Community, a 32-acre sustainable development located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, today announced it is the nation’s first recipient of the National Home Builder Association’s (NAHB) prestigious Land Development of the Year award.
“Pringle Creek Community is the first project to receive the NAHB Green Land Development of the Year award," said NAHB President Brian Catalde, a home builder in Southern California. "Selected from a pool of excellent candidates, Pringle Creek Community and its developers stood out with this very instructive, resource-efficient site design. The onsite recycling, preservation of trees and use of porous pavement, which is an innovative water retention feature, demonstrate the true sense of green commitment at Pringle Creek. NAHB applauds the application of sustainable design principles and conspicuous attention to environmentally conscious details."
Pringle Creek was selected to receive this honor because of the community’s state-of-the art site design and development practices, including the preservation of trees in open spaces and the reuse of pre-existing trees for construction projects within the community, and an innovative storm water management system utilizing the largest community porous asphalt and concrete road system in North America.
“We are thrilled to receive this honor from the NAHB,” said James Meyer, lead designer for Pringle Creek and principal of Portland, Ore.-based Opsis Architecture. "The Pringle Creek development team has worked tirelessly to establish innovative, sustainable land development standards to ensure onsite resource efficiency and environmental stewardship. We are delighted to be recognized as the first sustainable project to receive the Land Development of the Year award.”
Pringle Creek’s eco-conscious site design begins with the community’s innovative land development standards which incorporate the use of 9,000-feet of green streets – the first full-scale residential use of porous asphalt and environmentally-inspired forms of drainage – and the reuse and recycle of pre-existing trees to construct community gathering places. These sustainable practices also thread throughout design plans for Pringle Creek’s stylish mix of homes, including each exceeding Earth Advantage™ and Energy Star™ standards. Pringle Creek will also include a "neighborhood within the neighborhood" featuring 28 single-family and cottage-style carbon neutral/net-zero energy homes. In addition, residents and Salem community members can buy bio-diesel fuel from the Flower
Power Co-Op, learn about environmental issues at the non-profit Sustainable Living Center or make new friends while gardening in the orchards and community gardens
at Pringle Creek.
“From the streets to the rooftops every design detail has been carefully crafted to ensure healthy homes and healthy lifestyles for our residents,” said Don Myers, project manager and president of Salem-based Sustainable Development, Inc. “We believe sustainable developments contribute to community health and economic stability and there is a rapidly growing market for communities based on environmental stewardship. We are elated to receive this honor from the NAHB.”
Pringle Creek was honored for its exemplary green building and site design practices during an awards dinner at the 9th annual NAHB National Green Building Conference in St. Louis, Missouri.
